What is a router?
The router acts as a gateway and directs the flow of data
between your network and devices over the Internet. Having a router allows you
to connect more than one device to the Internet. Building devices on your
internal network (LAN or local area network) is the router's job, assuming they
are on an external network so that they can communicate over the Internet. Once
your router connection is established, data flows in two ways. The photos below
show several common routers. What does the router do?
When you connect to your ISP (Internet Service Provider)
they will give you an IP address. This is your external IP address. If you want
to have only one device on your network, you need that address.
Router for internet |
Each device connected to the Internet requires its own
unique and global IP address. So if you want to connect more than one device to
the internet, you need to use a router. A router takes the IP address provided
by the ISP and uses it to connect to the Internet or WAN (Wide Area Network).

What is NAT?
NAT (Network Address Translation) is a protocol used by all
routers to maintain a useful connection between the Internet and a device on
your network. NAT works by pretending that the device on your internal network
is on the Internet and protecting the network from external access. NAT is a
router that monitors which connections are made at various Internet locations
in the network and which devices use the data on the internal network.
What is a SOHO or Home Router?
Most routers are SOHO (small office / home office) or home
routers. They connect home, home office or small office networks to the
Internet. Many router manufacturers and many models of routers have different
features. Some routers provide WiFi so that your wireless devices can connect
seamlessly to your internal network (LAN). For a list of the many routers
available, visit our homepage.
Another type of router is called a core router. Core routers
handle data transfers very fast across networks around the world. Core routers
are central to the Internet and are the "backbone of the Internet".
